International Women’s Day – Hannah Newstead

Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women's Day?

“I believe we need to make sure we are uplifting women and celebrating our achievements to help continue the fight towards gender equality. International Women's Day is a great opportunity to come together and reflect on the past year’s achievements. Personally, I will use this day as an opportunity to get together with my Team and think about what we have achieved and are proud of in the past year as well as set goals for the future. I am particularly proud of my participation with CET’s charity work as they continue to support the domestic abuse charity Derby's Women's Centre, which really draws attention to the importance of empowering women.”

 What advice would you give to young women thinking about their careers?

“I'd tell them to be open to opportunities. Be prepared to spot growth opportunities when they present themselves—because they are the key learning opportunities. They might make you feel slightly uncomfortable, and your initial impulse may be that you’re not ready. But remember; growth and comfort rarely co-exist.

“If you wait around for the "perfect" opportunity, you might find yourself waiting for a long time whilst your skills and experience go to waste. If you’re looking for a new job, it can be tempting to not go for opportunities that aren’t exactly like you envisioned- that maybe feel like a stretch for the experience and skills you have. But really, what do you have to lose by stretching a little? The worst possible outcome is the word “No” which is rarely fatal. The other outcome in this situation is that you could be hired for a job that challenges you and allows you to grow as a professional. Face your fears and take as many opportunities as you can, because you never know where it might take you!”

Why do you think diversity in the workplace is so important?

“When employees can work with others from diverse backgrounds, they are given the opportunity to create better quality service and results. They earn a mutual respect for their co-workers and can promote several innovations to problem solving that any organisation looks for. Being part of a workplace that fosters diversity allows me to grow and thrive, both professionally and personally.”

What is the proudest moment in your career to date?

“Without a doubt, my proudest moment to date was being successful in landing my role as Quality Audit & Governance manager last year. At the time I'd worked at CET for seven years and was very ready to get my teeth into a new challenge that I felt I could make a real difference in. What makes my job special is that every day is different and daily pushes me out of my comfort zone and referring to what I've said previously, this constantly pushes me towards career growth. I now manage a Team of six fabulous ladies, who each bring a little something different to the table - I'm proud to be part of such an amazing Team of talented people. If someone had told me seven years ago, when I was just starting at CET on the phones part-time, that I'd be doing what I'm doing now I would have never believed them! My motto is dream big, stay positive, work hard, and enjoy the journey.... I know I definitely am!”
