International Women's Day: Becky Hook

Why do you think it is important to celebrate International Women’s Day?

It’s the 21st century and I feel that women still have to work twice as hard as men. There are very pressing issues around female inequality within the workplace such as the gender-pay gap. But by having a day dedicated to raising awareness around the inequalities women face in their careers, I believe we are one step closer towards achieving equality within society.

What advice would you give to young women thinking about their careers?

Do something that you enjoy. My mum has always said to me “Don’t do something because you feel like you have to or that that is what is expected of you by society. Do it because you want to.” And this is something that I firmly believe in and stand by.

Why do you think diversity in the workplace is so important?

I think everyone deserves equal opportunities in life. Everyone should be heard and valued regardless of their gender or their background.

What is the proudest moment in your career to date?

For me, my entire career journey is something that I am extremely proud of. The opportunities I have had and how supportive everyone around me has been has also been a massive help. The support that CET provides makes me feel very proud to work for them. CET value everyone regardless of job title, ethnicity, or gender.

I don’t feel hindered to progress my career within CET. If I need help, I will ask for it and will get it. CET has been really supportive with my transition back to work from maternity leave, and I simply couldn’t ask for a better team to be apart of.
